Multiple "large explosions" have been reported on Kharg Island just hours before President Donald Trump’s looming deadline.
A state-run publication in Iran has claimed a blast was heard earlier today near the crucial island, which sits in the Strait of Hormuz - a vital global energy route through which around 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.
According to Metro, a post from Mehr News Agency on Telegram read: "The American-Zionist enemy has carried out several attacks on Kharg Island, and several explosions have also been heard on the island."
There has been speculation that the strikes may have hit the island’s key oil export hub, a move that could disrupt crude oil flows across the Middle East region.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps responded to the explosions by declaring that "Restraint is Over" and vowing retaliation.
The group said it would target US and allied infrastructure across the region and disrupt oil and gas supplies "for years".
BBC Persia reporter Farzad Seifikaran also shared on X: "Iranian media reported several large explosions on Kharg Island as a result of an Israeli attack."
The reports come hours after Trump said Iran "could be taken out in one night, and that night could be tomorrow night," during a speech at the White House on Monday (April 6).
The warning comes ahead of a key deadline set by the president for Tehran to reopen the Strait.
The 79-year-old has demanded an 'acceptable' deal by 20:00 Washington DC time on Tuesday (April 7), and added that if the deadline is missed, Iran could effectively be pushed back to the 'Stone Ages,' per BBC News.
"They're going to have no bridges," he said. "They're going to have no power plants."
