Heartbreaking details as California toddler, 1, was 'boiled alive' in scalding bath by mom and boyfriend
Heartbreaking details have emerged after a one-year-old boy died after being 'boiled alive' in a scalding hot bath by his mom and her boyfriend.
One-year-old Henry Wheatley-Brown tragically died after suffering second- and third-degree burns across his body in the horrifying incident.
His mother, Samantha Garver, 26, and her boyfriend Sergio Mena, 34, admitted to second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in serious bodily harm after Wheatley-Brown was fatally injured in their home on the 700 block of Santa Barbara Ave, in Sugarloaf, California, roughly a mile from Big Bear City, on September 30, 2023.
Garver was sentenced to 14 years in prison, while Mena was handed a 21-year sentence in the wake of the baby's tragic death, after he placed Wheatley-Brown into a scorching bath and left him, reportedly so he could smoke methamphetamine.
According to the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office, Mena returned to find Wheatley-Brown "severely burned" and screaming in agony in the bath, but made no attempt to alleviate his suffering.
"Despite Henry's extensive and life-threatening injuries, neither defendant sought medical care, instead attempting to treat the burns with over-the-counter ointment," prosecutors said.
The couple only sought help the following day after noticing the toddler's "shallow breathing".
The district attorney's office reported: "Paramedics found Henry without a pulse, ice-cold to the touch and severely dehydrated. Henry died as a result of a scalding injury, and the case was classified as a homicide."
It added in a statement: "Although nothing can bring back baby Henry or erase the suffering he endured, today's sentences deliver justice and ensure these defendants will never again harm a child.
"The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office will honor Henry's memory by never forgetting him and by continuing to fight for vulnerable children."
Following an inquiry, authorities suggested that the toddler had suffered persistent abuse before his death, being found with extensive bruising on his body, petechiae in his eyes, and several healing fractures in both arms, along with the burns from the bath, per the Daily Express US.
An investigation by Child Services also determined that the little boy's death was down to "abuse or neglect".
Records across several years had documented the alleged abuse Wheatley-Brown and his three older siblings had suffered, with the Los Angeles Times reporting that the San Bernardino County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) were involved with Garver.
Garver reportedly confessed to DCFS staff that she "felt like putting a pillow over" one of her children who would not stop crying, and had alleged posted on Facebook asking whether "duct taping a child's mouth is abusive."
