Donald Trump lashes out at Robert De Niro in 'sick and demented' social media post
Donald Trump has fired back at Robert De Niro, calling him a 'sick and demented person' in a social media post.
The 82-year-old Goodfellas star launched a blistering attack on the president during Monday’s episode of MSNBC’s The Best People with Nicole Wallace podcast.
“He’s an idiot. We gotta get rid of him. He’s gonna ruin the country. I don’t want everybody going around with their MAGA, the American flags, like they’re the only ones. We are Americans too," he said.
“Let’s not kid ourselves,” he told the host.
“It’s that simple. Everybody has to stick together to get them out and get back on track. We can all argue and fight about our little differences and all that.”
The Taxi Driver star warned that there is 'no way' Trump would leave office after his second term ends in 2029.
“It’s up to us to get rid of him. We have to make sure. We’ve got to get rid of him. He’s going to ruin the country. People have to mobilize now and be ready for the midterms," he said.
'The State Of The Swamp' Counter-Address
On Tuesday (February 24), just over a mile from Trump’s State of the Union inside the US Capitol, the Academy Award-winning star headlined 'The State of the Swamp' at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
According to USA Today, the event was organized by anti-Trump group Defiance.org, artist-activist coalition Portland Frog Brigade, and advocacy media network Courier, which also welcomed names like Avengers alum Mark Ruffalo and author Marianne Williamson.
I feel betrayed by my country," an emotional De Niro said during the address.
"It doesn't have to be perfect, but it does need to return to the values that gave us our strength and humanity," cited by The Independent.
He urged political action, adding: "If you want our leaders to be accountable, if you’re devoted to the constitution and the rule of law, if you want the United States of America to be worthy of your love, be ready to take to the streets together, and we will take our country back."
Trump Fires Back On Truth Social
The president wasted little time responding. In a lengthy Truth Social post on Wednesday, he labeled De Niro 'another sick and demented person with, I believe, an extremely Low IQ, who has absolutely no idea what he is doing or saying - some of which is seriously CRIMINAL!'
“When I watched him break down in tears last night, much like a child would do, I realized that he may be even sicker than Crazy Rosie O’Donnell,” he added.
In the same post, the president also took aim at Democratic lawmakers, writing: “When you watch Low IQ Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, as they screamed uncontrollably last night at the very elegant State of the Union, such an important and beautiful event, they had the bulging, bloodshot eyes of crazy people, LUNATICS, mentally deranged and sick who, frankly, look like they should be institutionalized.”
The White House also weighed in with a statement.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung called De Niro a 'washed-up has-been who hasn't been relevant in 30 years'.
“Now, he just beclowns himself by spewing hate speech and inciting violence against others. Instead of embarrassing himself every time he speaks, he should seek immediate treatment for a debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted his peanut sized brain,” Cheung said.
De Niro has been outspoken against Trump since the lead-up to his second-term election in 2024.
In a November pre-election interview on HBO Max’s Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, the actor, who supported Kamala Harris, said the 79-year-old and his allies were 'not real Republicans'.
When asked whether he had personal run-ins with Trump during their years in New York, De Niro responded: “No. I never wanted anything to do with him...He’s a jerk, an idiot, who wants to meet a clown like that?”
“You’ve got to help everybody. People are going to get overlooked. That happens, but at least you have somebody who’s sensitive to the condition of the country, the people. And I’m not saying this like this, because it’s Kamala Harris, but it is. We need someone like her to do it."
“She’ll make mistakes. Of course, everybody does, but we need somebody with the right intentions, this guy does not have the right intentions, and everybody knows that. It’s insanity. Period," he added.
