Fans of Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide were left stunned after learning that former child actor Tylor Chase, who played the ultra-chatty Martin Qwerly, is now living on the streets of California, struggling with severe addiction and mental health issues.
Now, in a new interview, Chase’s father has opened up about the heartbreaking journey their family has endured for more than ten years.
"He’s a wonderful person when he’s Tylor"
Joseph Mendez Jr., 60, revealed that his son - whose legal name is Tylor Kurtis Mendez - has battled addiction, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia for over a decade.
“He’s a wonderful person when he’s Tylor,” Mendez told the Daily Mail.
“For over a decade, the family has sought treatment options for Tylor, including support for substance use as well as mental health care,” the Georgia-based realtor continued.
“In addition to addiction, Tylor has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, which require consistent medical treatment.”
Mendez explained that in 2021, Chase received treatment in Georgia, but the progress didn’t last.
“Approximately four years ago, he received treatment in Georgia, and while there was progress for a time, he later chose to discontinue medication and resumed substance use,” he said.
“More recently, Tylor returned to California to be with his mother in hopes of stabilizing his situation; however, despite continued support, he has refused ongoing treatment and assistance.”
Arrests, treatment refusals, and family heartbreak
Riverside police confirmed Chase has turned down offers for help multiple times. The department’s Public Safety Engagement Team checks in with him weekly, offering shelter and treatment - but he consistently declines.
“We do not know how long he has been experiencing homelessness,” said Public Information Officer Ryan Railsback. “During all of our interactions, he has been cordial and cooperative with our officers.”
Court records show Chase has faced 12 criminal cases in Riverside County since August 2023, including eight in the current year.
His most recent arrests involved alleged shoplifting and being under the influence of a controlled substance. Warrants were issued in both cases, but police clarified he is not currently wanted for any crimes.
A glimmer of hope from fellow child star Shaun Weiss
Shaun Weiss - known for voicing characters in Disney’s The Mighty Ducks - stepped in to help after seeing Tylor’s story go viral.
“I reached out to some friends of mine, and we have a bed for him at a detox, and we have a place for him to go and get long-term treatment thanks to my buddy Mike Jordan at 1111 Recovery,” Weiss announced in an Instagram video.
“We have also spoken with Shaun Weiss and are working together in an effort to help Tylor,” Mendez confirmed. “His family has been trying for many years to get him the support he needs, but ultimately, he must be willing to accept help.
“Tylor is deeply loved by his family and friends, who remain hopeful and are praying that he will accept the help being offered. Their focus continues to be on his safety, health, and well-being.”
This week, Chase’s former costar Daniel Curtis Lee, 34, stepped up in a touching way - checking him into a hotel and embracing him in a heartfelt reunion captured on video.
