Truth behind clip 'showing Charli XCX's rude reaction to Taylor Swift' during VMA's speech

A clip featuring music industry titans Taylor Swift and Charli XCX has gone viral overnight, but it may not all be as it seems.

It's fair to say that there were a fair few talking points from Sunday's annual awards event at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Fans will tell you that most of them involved Madonna, who opened the show alongside Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter.

Not only was she thrown onto a platform at one point, but the 'Like a Virgin' artist found time to make an NSFW joke while accepting one of her seven award wins, 'pulling' a laser out of her behind after sporting one in a performance.

But now, an artist she performed the opening ceremony with is among the headlines, thanks to some sly editing from social media users.

Charli XCX makes 'face' during Taylor Swift speech

A clip has circulated on social media overnight, garnering millions of views as many believed it to be true.

It starts with Swift thanking the fans for making "writing and directing music videos" so much more fun, before it cuts to Charli, who looked unamused while lightly slapping her thigh with one hand as others clapped and cheered.

However, this clip wasn't from the same section of the awards.

That's right, some accounts hunting for interactions have edited the British artist's reaction from a completely different award, stirring up controversy with fans online.

Charli, who was one of many artists who presented, watched the rest of the show from the crowd, and her featured reaction was not to Swift's speech, but to Nirvana's Video Vanguard Award speech.

It's taken completely out of context, meant to anger fans from both sides online - I believe they call it engagement bait.

X has since added a community note to the video, detailing: "The video is edited. Charli XCX's reaction was filmed during Nirvana's Video Vanguard Award speech, not Taylor Swift's."

The note also shares two links to the real moment the '360' singer was reacting to.

Before this was confirmed, many started to criticize Charli for her 'reaction', as she appeared mostly emotionless and unimpressed.

Reaction from fans towards Charli XCX

The original account that shared the video, @petaltrin, is labeled by the social media platform as a 'parody account'.

Swift and Charli have been rumored to have fallen out over the years, though this has never been confirmed.

But many believed it, as one wrote: "The cameraman knew what he was doing lmao," and another added: "She so real for that."

Soon, some well-informed fans came to the Brat artist's defence, with someone writing: "Girl this is edited…she did this for another artist, I was literally watching all of Taylor’s speech and the camera didn’t pan to Charli ONCE…yall need to chill…"

A different fan described the page as "obsessed" after noticing the snippet was from the Nirvana speech, following hate being sent towards the Brit.

One honest user admitted: "I don't like Charli xcx but this clip is edited, don't spread fake news!"

I guess if you're a celebrity at an awards show, keep that smile on you 24/7.
