Bill Hader and Ali Wong have officially gone their separate ways after more than two years together, and while the headlines blame hectic schedules, new claims suggest there was more going on behind the scenes.
At first, reports from People magazine painted a clean break, chalking up the split to “competing and busy work schedules” that made the relationship “too difficult” to maintain.
The outlet described the breakup as “amicable” and insisted “they are very much friends.”
But sources close to the pair tell a different story.
Insiders point to Hader’s “moody” personality
According to the Daily Mail, those in Hader’s Hollywood circle have long known about the 47-year-old’s intense personality, and it may have played a major role in the breakup.
“Bill is not the easiest to be around, he is tense and harsh a lot of the time, everyone knows this in Hollywood, that is why his nickname is Bill Hater, because he hates on certain things,” a source revealed.
The same insider added: “That is how Bill gets so many cute girls; he can be kind at times, but then he can be prickly. You never know what you're going to get with him.”
Friends close to the former couple apparently saw this split coming. “He was already on the outs with Ali,” the source shared, claiming the two had grown distant over the past few months.
And even early in their romance, there were doubts about their long-term potential. “No one thought it would last because she is a super sweet girl, very normal, very fun and easy going, and he is not. I guess she could take only so much,” the insider claimed.
Despite his difficult side, the source acknowledged: “Bill is cranky,” but also “hilarious” and “clever”.
A history of short-lived romances
Since his 2018 divorce from filmmaker Maggie Carey, Hader’s love life has been a revolving door. He dated The O.C. star Rachel Bilson for less than a year, with their relationship ending in July 2020.
Bilson later stunned podcast listeners when she bluntly admitted the one thing she misses about Hader is “his big d***”.
Hader then dated actress Anna Kendrick for roughly two years, until they called it off in summer 2022.
By December of that year, the Saturday Night Live alum was linked to 43-year-old Wong, who had just finalized her divorce from businessman Justin Hakuta. Though their connection fizzled quickly, the pair reignited the flame in April 2023.
Wong later opened up about how Hader made the first move: he got her number from a mutual friend and texted her that he’d had a crush on her “forever”.
But now, they’ve gone their separate ways once again. “It’s not a good time for Bill,” said the insider. “He's approaching his 50s and he is alone again, but he shouldn't be shocked.”
Hader rocked by friend’s murder and bizarre party incident
To make matters worse, Hader has also been coping with a horrific tragedy involving one of his close friends.
On December 14, director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home. Their son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, has been charged with the double homicide.
The murders happened just hours after Nick reportedly had a confrontation with Hader at a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien on December 13.
NBC News reported that Nick was acting erratically and interrupted Hader during a conversation. Hader told him he was “in the middle of a private conversation,” prompting Nick to “storm off,” according to the source.
That night, Rob and Michele Reiner were killed.
One source told the Daily Mail that Hader was “horrified” and “extremely sad” about the tragedy.
“Bill doesn’t want this tragedy to be made about him, and any disagreement he may have had with Nick, Bill is refusing to talk about it,” the source said.
